BROADCASTING AUTHORITY OF IRELAND
Cogar is a joint project between Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge and theBroadcasting Authority of Ireland.
The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) was established on 1st October 2009 following the enactment of the Broadcasting Act 2009.
The BAI and Irish Language Promotion
The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) provides support to the promotion of Irish language development within the broadcasting sector and to raise the profile of the Authority amongst the Irish language community and secondary school students.
Most recently, the BAI provides sponsorship support to a number of Irish language initiatives, including
• Cogar Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge and the BAI operate a joint project, entitled Cogar which is a regular e-newsletter, produced and distributed by Comhdháil Náisiunta na Gaeilge.
• Comórtas Clár Raidió. Together with Gael Linn and the independent radio broadcasting sector, the BAI promotes an annual radio competition ‘Comórtas Clár Raidió’ for secondary school students. This competition not only fosters an interest in media among secondary school students but also promotes the use of Irish in the media.
• Seachtain na Gaeilge. Funding is provided to Seachtain na Gaeilge to co-ordinate a number of broadcasting specific workshops aimed at secondary school students. These workshops are held in the run up to Seachtain na Gaeilge. The workshops are hosted by a mix of community, commercial and public service radio stations nationwide resulting in the production of mini-programmes and features ‘as gaeilge’.
• Gradaim Ghlór na nGael sponsorship funding is provided as part of the Glór na Gael to radio stations who promote the Irish language over the year. There are two awards; one for commercial stations and one for community stations.
• Professional Development. In assisting the development of Irish language broadcasting in the community radio sector, the BAI continues to make available various Irish language manuals for those working with Irish in the broadcasting sector: (i) An Droichead: Lámhleabhar Traenála Raidió; (ii) Nathanna Cainte don Raidió.
