The Added Advantage of Irish and Young People
600 secondary school students attended two seminars entitled 'The Added Advantage of Irish' which were organised in Galway and Dublin during the year.
Tóstal na Gaeilge and The 20 Year Irish Language Strategy
- Tóstal na Gaeilge, was organised in Galway in February. Recommendations proposed by the public at Tóstal na Gaeilge relating to Irish Language Strategic Plan 2028 were forwarded by An Chomdháil for consideration by the consultants appointed by the Government.
- A presentation to the consultants on An Chomhdháil's recommendations was made.
Other Advocacy Issues
- Submissions in relation to policies and plans which would affect the promotion of the Irish language were forwarded to Government Departments and other public bodies.
Legislation
- 19 submissions made to public bodies preparing draft language schemes under the Official Languages Act 2003.
- Played an active role in the campaign which aimed to achieve a Language Act for Northern Ireland.
- Amendments to the Broadcasting Bill were proposed, some of which have been accepted to date.
Planning in the Gaeltacht
A total of 31 submissions, appeals, or opinions were submitted in 2008, to relevant planning authorities.
The Poets' Tour
A successful poetry competition was held as part of this annual cultural exchange between Ireland and Scotland.

An Chomhdháil undertook the marketing and distribution of the book 'More Facts About Irish' by Helen Ó Murchú published by the Irish Committee of EBLUL.
An Fáinne
Marketing campaign undertaken, resulting in an increase of 22% in sales of An Fáinne and 46% in sales of Cúpla Focal on the previous year.

Submissions made to public bodies who were preparing draft language schemes.
Information and continuous advice for the general public in relation to their rights and entitlements under The Official Languages Act 2003, available online at www.gaelport.com.
Other Legislation
Attended upon invitation a meeting of a Joint Committee of the Oireachtas to answer questions on our submissions in relation to the Draft Broadcasting Bill.
Played an active role in the campaign which aimed to achieve a Language Act for Northern Ireland.
Planning in the Gaeltacht
Seminar on planning matters, and annual meeting of Airdeall organised in An Spidéal.
The work carried out by Airdeall has had a visible effect on both County Councils and developers.
Irish language restriction applied to 80% of houses proposed by Galway County Council in their Draft Gaeltacht Local Area Plan.
A total of 32 submissions, appeals, or opinions were submitted during the year, to relevant Planning Authorities.
Election 2007
A one day conference entitled "Irish Your Vote" was held, to collect suggestions and requirements from the public for the next government. Political Party policies were influenced, by a campaign organised on behalf of the member organisations.
Other Advocacy Issues
Submissions in relation to corporate plans, strategic statements, and customer charters to Government Departments and other public bodies.
Actively participated in the campaign protecting total immersion policies.
The Poets' Tour, a cultural exchange programme between Ireland and Scotland.
Tóstal na Gaeilge 2008
The programme of events for Tóstal na Gaeilge 2008, the major Irish Language event planned for 2008, has been confirmed, and a campaign publicising this event is underway.
Appointments
Pádraig Mac Criostail appointed as Director of Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge in August of this year. Kevin De Barra appointed as Marketing and Communications Manager in December 2007, along with two executives in the areas of marketing and public relations.
